Chat Moderation: What is it, exactly?

I supposed that you are here, either because you heard of the term "Chat Moderation" for the first time and by the looks of it sounded like a scam, or - you have been looking up and down for a non-voice job you can perform at home but can't find one, or - you simply are curious what a chat operator do on a day to day basis at work.

Good news! You have clicked on the right blog and you're one step away from clearing the confusion/s you have in your head and you know what? I have a piece of better news - Chat Moderation is not a scam!

First things first: Chat Moderation is a task that can be done in a wide array of careers or fields. Chat moderators can be a set of people that regulates and/or answer chats and the way it is done differs depending on the product, company, or business. From the word itself - chat moderators simply moderate incoming chats and the most common example are customer service representatives behind a website that answers inquire or "chats" from potential customers.

But then again, there are different types of businesses that require chat moderator work, and depending on the product or service being offered, we may be dealing with a different chat moderation job each one of us has in mind.

Question: Okay, so if we are not talking about the chat operator that does customer service through a platform, what exactly are we talking about?

Chat moderation is a term used most commonly for a job that is deemed not-so-common publicly. Workers are called Chat Moderators or Operators whose main task is to chat for social entertainment purposes only. However, this definition is rather vague for most.

The business we are dealing with is an operation where owners created a platform people can divulge into genuine conversations with another human. These "other humans" are supposedly us, chat operators who answer these messages in a humane and genuine manner as possible. Cmon! Neither I would want to talk with computer-generated responses, eh? So yes, my dear people, believe it or not, these platforms do exist.

Question: Got it, but then in what form do these "platforms" come in shape of?

Ah, the answer we all are waiting for. These platforms are what we know as "dating sites". This most likely is the reason why the job is deemed taboo for the working industry. These businesses would want to reach the right people to hire for the job but discreet enough not to reach or discourage people who can be current or potential clients.

These businesses behind dating sites cater to clients from all walks of life and backgrounds. As a chat operator, you will be facilitating conversations about everyday life or letting these clients talk about their dreams or fantasies. Above all this, you will remain completely anonymous.

CATCH: Since this is a real job that requires real work, the company pays you depending on the number of messages you produce.

I understand why most people would think of this job as a scam. With all the perks it includes, it maybe is too good to be true. What perks am I referring to?

  • The job is 100% remote. As long as you have your computer and internet connection, you can work anywhere in the world. This is one of the reasons why any nationality can do the job.

  • It is completely non-voice. If you are or have been in the call center industry, you would by now realize how programs that require you to talk on the phone 8 hours a day can be deadly. Tasks that do not require one to spit a word are a blessing. Chat and email tops this list. All you have to do is chat all throughout your working hours. Don't you do the same in your free time? This is merely working at all.

  • You get to work any hour of the day. Since you are paid by the total number of messages you send, you are completely in control of the hours you spend working and which time of the day you feel like doing it. There will come a day when you just woke up but needs a few more hours to snooze but with this job, no one will stop you to get it. You will never be late or absent again!

  • You are your own boss. No one will tell you what you should do. There is dedicated support you can run to when you have questions but other than that, you simply control your work. As long as you abide by the rules set by the company, you'll be okay.

  • Control your income. The sky is the limit! If you need more money, then chat more - it would not be an issue. Assess your best performance. How many chats can you do in an hour, in a 4-hour shift, or in a whole 8 working hours? Look for effective ways to increase productivity, lessen distractions and push yourself to the limit. On the other hand, if it has been a bad day, you can just keep things cool and be easy on yourself. How cool is that?

  •  This is a perfect side gig. If you are working full time and no longer have any remaining willpower to go from one workplace to another then, look no more! Right after an 8-hour shift, you can choose to open your laptop and start working on the same spot or, the supposedly 1 hour you need to spend commuting to another workplace, you can instead use that to recharge and sleep before starting another grind. Working at home has always been a dream come true.

  • Weekly pay! If this does not impress you, I don't know what else will. Payout schedules vary from one company to another. Some pay their operators twice or even once in a month (WTH) but with Texting Factory, weekly pay is a thing. Oh god, I love TF! They follow a weekly cut-off, Mondays to Sundays. Receive your invoice on a Tuesday then get it on your account by Thursday.

Takeaway: The job seems perfect but it still is far from that. Every buck you will be paid for requires effort and time first. You cannot just be sleeping all day, that's not how it works. Regardless of how easy and convenient the job maybe, as a chat operator, you will still need to be awake at least and get your fingers moving and imagination working to respond to messages accordingly.
